On the afternoon of 8th November, 2024, renowned academic and researcher Dr. Indrajit Ghosh Roy presented a riveting talk on “Earth’s Magnetism: Mysticism to Geoscience Applications”. Dr. Roy has worked as an eminent geoscience professional for about four decades across the globe (Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad, India, University of Texas at Austin, Australian National University, and Geoscience Australia). The talk encompassed significant scientific insights into Earth’s magnetism which initiated from the 19th century, got a major fillip by the middle of 20th century, and has played significant roles in different genres of geosciences, viz., plate tectonics, exploration initiatives, environmental applications, as well as extra terrestrial planetary explorations. The talk was an abridged version of his book “A history of Magnetism in Human Civilisation: Magnetism on the Long Arc of Time”, published by Cambridge Scholars. The talk was attended by Prof. Shalivahan (director), Prof. Vijay Kumar (Dean R&D), and other professors of Earth Sciences, along with the M.Sc. Applied Geology and Ph.D. students.
