Mechanical Engineering Laboratories

Strength of Materials Laboratory

Prof. I/C: Dr. Sharon H.

List of Experiments

Part of the coursework for 3rd Semester Mechanical Engineering students

  • Tension testing of ductile material
  • Compression testing of brittle material
  • Bending test on simply supported beam
  • Bending test on cantilever beam
  • Buckling of struts
  • Torsion testing of shafts
  • Impact testing
  • Poisson ratio estimation
  • Spring stiffness test (open and close coiled springs)
  • Hardness testing of materials

The Strength of Materials Laboratory is dedicated to exploring the behavior of materials under various types of loading, such as tension, compression, bending, and torsion. Equipped with modern testing machines, the lab allows students to study stress-strain relationships, material deformation, failure modes, and mechanical properties of metals and composites. This practical exposure helps build a strong foundation in material mechanics essential for design and analysis in engineering applications.
