About the Institute

Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) Visakhapatnam was established by an Act of Parliament under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and declared as an Institute of National Importance. It is a research institute focusing on emerging areas in the energy sector. IIPE is committed to producing skilled human resources to meet the growing needs of the petroleum and energy industries.

About the Department

The Department of Petroleum Engineering and Earth Sciences was started in 2016 with the mission to provide skilled and highly qualified engineers in the field of Petroleum Engineering and Earth Sciences. The department currently offers a 4-year B.Tech program in Petroleum Engineering, a 2-year M.Sc. program in Applied Geology, and a PhD program in Petroleum Engineering and Earth Sciences.

About the Conference

Natural hydrogen (H2), an emerging and promising energy source, holds the potential to revolutionize the global energy landscape. With its minimal environmental footprint and natural abundance, it presents a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Hydrogen is carbon-free fuel but producing it is both costly and extremely energy intensive. Some researchers believe that cheap, vast, and potentially renewable sources of natural hydrogen lie underneath the earth’s surface. The earth’s hydrogen factories include: (1) Radiolysis, (2) Serpentinization, (3) Deep seated, (4) Seeps, (5) Microbes, (6) Abiotic reactions, (7) Traps, (8) Direct, and (9) Enhanced. The amount of Natural hydrogen is about half of the atmospheric hydrogen. Soil can absorb atmospheric hydrogen and becomes the main hydrogen sink “Natural hydrogen has the potential to cause the biggest disruption to the global energy system in the coming decades.” Time will surely tell!
