About the Institute

The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India, and is backed by public sector Oil and Gas giants viz. HPCL, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, and OIL. The objective of establishing the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) is to meet the quantitative and qualitative gaps and to supply skilled manpower for Petroleum Sector. The vision of IIPE is to be an Energy University that is ranked among top 200 Universities of the world within 20 years of setup. The mission is to create and disseminate knowledge that facilitates progress and excellence in the field of Energy sector.

About the Department

Offering both undergraduate (B. Tech) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs, the Department of Chemical Engineering aims to provide students with the extensive knowledge they need to be a part of the energy sector in the Indian industrial space. The courses offered are a balanced mix of traditional areas such as reaction engineering, thermodynamics, and process control, as well as emerging fields like waste management, corrosion, renewable energy, machine learning, and nanoscience. Students gain hands-on experience with various simulation software, including MATLAB, Aspen, and Fluent, and have access to laboratories equipped with the latest technology and machinery.

About the Workshop

Digitalization of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) involves the integration of advanced digital technologies, data analytics, and automation to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and decision-making. As wastewater treatment faces increasing challenges related to population growth, climate change, and stricter regulations, digital solutions provide innovative approaches for process optimization, real-time monitoring, and predictive maintenance.

Workshop Objectives

Key Components of Digitalization in WWTPs

Data Analytics Image
Data Analytics and AI-driven Process Control
  • AI and ML optimize treatment processes and reduce energy consumption.
  • Predictive analytics identify potential failures and inefficiencies.
Data Analytics Image
Model-based Process Optimization
  • Digital twins enable simulation and optimization of operations.
  • MPC and RL techniques improve aeration, sludge management, and dosing.
Data Analytics Image
Automation and Smart Control Systems
  • SCADA systems automate pumps, aerators, and other processes.
  • APC strategies enhance stability and reduce costs.
Data Analytics Image
Energy and Resource Recovery Optimization
  • Digital tools optimize biogas production and energy efficiency.
  • AI-based monitoring ensures efficient nutrient recovery and water reuse.

The key benefits of Digitalization in WWTPs include
(i) Improved Process Efficiency
(ii) Cost Reduction
(iii) Enhanced Compliance
(iv) Resilience and Sustainability.
The integration of digitalization with concepts like Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, and Circular Economy will further transform wastewater treatment, making it more intelligent, sustainable, and resource- efficient.

In this workshop, some of the above topics will be discussed. The course will introduce participants the approaches and tools for the mathematical modeling and control of WWTP and will provide hands-on experience with simulation software WEST/GPS-X and model- based design, optimization and control of WWTP. Prof. Peter Vanrolleghem from University of Laval, Canada who is a leading researcher with extensively recognized expertise in teaching, consultancy, research, and training in the field of WWTP, modelling, machine learning, dynamic optimization and control will deliver most of the lectures.
