The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) has recently been established in Vishakhapatnam. The deemed university has signed an MoU with IIT-Kharagpur at the Andhra University on 30th June. IIT-Kharagpur will be mentoring the newly established institute for the next three years. IIT’s mentorship will be to provide support and will act as an advisor till IIPE has its fully functional campus of its own ready.
IIPE will start its operations from August 1 in Andhra University College of Engineering, which will be the temporary campus.
The MoU were exchanged between IIPE’s special officer, Mr. V.S Shenoy and Prof. Sunanda Dasgupta of IIT-Kharagpur in the presence of District Collector N. Yuvaraj, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Sushma Rath, AU Registrar V. Umamaheswara Rao, Advisor of Academics and Director (in-charge) of IIPE V.S.R.K. Prasad and other officials from AU and HPCL.
IIT- Kharagpur will aim to support in recruiting faculty, designing curriculum and offering teaching assistance. IIT-K will also jointly take up research in association with the industry. Three departments of IIT-Kharagpur – chemical engineering, mining and geology – would be directly cooperating with the IIPE.
IIPE will be the hub of excellence and will play a key role in research and development in assisting the industry in meeting the energy needs. The institute will focus on existing exploration and will tap on un-explored research areas. IIPE is aiming to reduce the dependence on foreign technology for conducting these researches.
IIPE is supported financially, academically and quality industry-academia interface by oil majors like HPCL, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, OIL, OIDB, BPCL and Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The government is funding Rs. 655 crore as capital for the institute.
IIPE’s new campus will be ready in the next three years on the 150 acres of land allotted by the State Government in Sabbavaram.
